This happy little Leprechaun is Michael David Rosenberg. Now you might be saying to yourself, but I thought Leprechauns were Irish not Jewish. Well, if you’re assuming he is Jewish because his last name is Rosenberg then you need a little lesson on Germanic-language family names. Fortunately, I have access to Wikipedia, and I’m willing to plagiarize. Here you go:
Rosenberg is a Germanic-language family name and toponym. Its principal meaning is “mountain of roses”…in some locations it may have originally meant “red mountain” or simply “red hill”. While sometimes inaccurately assumed to be exclusively Ashkenazi Jewish, it is a common surname among people of Baltic German, Sinti, and Swedish ancestry.
Mike here actually was born to an American Jewish father and an English mother, so your preconceived notions were partially correct, but that doesn’t mean they’ll always be right. Why, you might ask, are you introducing me to a half-jewish leprechaun? Well because he is the latest artist added to my 40B440 Playlist, not to be confused with my UB40 Playlist.
You may not have heard of Michael David Rosenberg, but if you’ve listened to Top 40 Radio between 2012 and 2016 you’ve certainly heard one of his songs (repeatedly). I’m not going to name the song, because we’ve already established that you are subject to biases, and I don’t want to taint your impression of his music. It deserves to be heard with fresh ears and an open mind. I’m not saying his previous entry into the charts was bad, just overplayed.
As recommended by my third favorite Harwood in the UK, for the last 5 days I’ve been listening to a few of the songs from Mike’s album Whispers. I’d already decided to post the videos for two of those songs when I came across the following beauty on his website. It’s certainly not his best work, but if you like taking the piss out of Trump, you’ll enjoy it. If on the other hand you have a soft spot for that old orange man, you might want to skip this song.
As much fun as that song is, you should definitely do yourself a favour and listen to the following two to get a better sense of what he has to offer.
Just to be clear, the irony of blogging about a song with the following lyrics isn’t lost on me:
We want something real not just hash tags and Twitter
It’s the meaning of life and it’s streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style will still get more views
We’re scared of drowning, flying and shooters
But we’re all slowly dying in front of f**king computers
If you like what you heard and want to hear more, a bunch of his stuff is on Youtube, and all of his albums are on Google Play and I’m assuming Spotify. If you enjoy covers, and especially covers of Simon & Garfunkel or REM songs, it is definitely worth checking out the Passenger Music Youtube Channel
You can also visit Passenger’s website
Big thanks to Katy for her recommendation. If you ever need a job on the Isle of Wight, she’s your girl.
