Setback \’set- bak\ (noun): a reversal or check in progress. “Sean’s inability to do more than one pull-up tonight is a serious setback to his training regime. He must feel pretty deflated”
Why a picture of Eeyore you might be asking. Well at the moment he’s my spirit animal. He gets my disappointment. I was scheduled to do progress checks on my sit-ups and pull-ups tonight, so I went out the garage all pumped to see what the last two weeks of work has yielded me.
Nothing. More accurately, worse than nothing because I actually did one less pull-up than my baseline test. For those of you keeping track, that means I was able to rip off one (1) pull-up tonight.
It’s a good thing I wrote myself that little post about Discipline the other day, because tonight’s outstanding performance sapped my motivation. A couple months ago I might have let this setback derail me. In Eeyore’s words:
“We can’t all, and some of us don’t.”
Instead I’ll try to be more Ghandi about the whole situation.
Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will.
Of course that’s coming from a guy who probably couldn’t do more than one pullup either, but his point is still valid. So, no quitting for me. Tomorrow I get back on my training schedule and keep on working.
