I completed my baseline tests for my push-up, pull-up, and sit-up challenges last night. As it turns out I have a long, long way to go before I meet my goals in that department. The numbers are pretty humbling, even more so when I look back at how far I’ve fallen. My pride is telling me not to admit to these numbers publicly, but I promised to be honest with this blog so here they are:
In case you’re wondering if that might be a typo on the pull-ups, let me confirm that I did in fact only complete 2. What’s worse is that the second one was terrible. No independent observer would have counted it, but for now I’m going to take it. After all 2 is exactly twice as many as 1.
So if you’re keeping track (don’t bother) here’s where I’m starting:
Sit-ups: 23/400 (6% of the way to my goal)
Push-ups: 25/100 (25% of the way to my goal)
Pull-ups: 2/40 (5% of the way to my goal)
Am I disappointed? Of course. Am I surprised? Honestly, I am even though I shouldn’t be. It’s a good wake-up call for me. I’m still confident that I’ll be able to accomplish the 100 push-up and 400 sit-up challenges. In the past it hasn’t taken long to build up those numbers, and if I had really pushed myself I could have improved my baseline on both of these. My biggest concern at this point is definitely the pull-ups. If I had been hanging from a cliff last night it would have been the fast way down for me.
All in all it was pretty demoralizing, but on the bright side I only need to add 1 more pull-up to improve my performance by 50%.
